
Watch Out for fake PennDOT texts targeting PA drivers

If you get a "final notice" text from the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicles, E-Z Pass or courts threatening fines and driving privliges it is a scam.
The scam text includes an official-looking link that includes "PA" and "gov" and includes a specific deadline for payment and a fake “state administrative code" used in the same scam message sent to people in other states. It is an attempt called "phishing" to get personal information such as bank account and credit cards. information,
The text threatens to report the recipient to the "PADMV breach database," suspension of driving privileges and vehicle registration for 30 days, increased toll charges, a possible lawsuit and potential damage to credit scores if payment isn't made.
PennDOT says it does not send texts about fines or traffic violations and advises anyone receiving the message not to click the links.
Scam texts related to the NJMVC
Pennsylvania Courts reports a similar text that reports an outstanding traffic ticket that must be paid immediately with similar phony penalties.
"The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts will never place calls or send text messages to anyone soliciting payment by credit card, gift card, or any other means of electronic funds transfer for any reason," the court said in a statement.
Similar fake texts were reported by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and courts along with Florida, Georgia and New York.
What to do if you receive a text scam (Newtown Township Police)
